What is AP ECET? — The Complete Guide

A senior's honest breakdown — everything they don't tell you in college

If you're a diploma student in AP and want to get into B.Tech 2nd year directly, AP ECET is your one shot. Here's everything — the exam, the rank, the counselling, the mistakes seniors made — so you don't waste a single day.

Most students waste months doing nothing, panic 3 weeks before the exam, and end up with a bad rank. This page exists so you don't repeat that mistake.

What is AP ECET?

AP ECET — Andhra Pradesh Engineering Common Entrance Test — is the state-level exam for diploma holders to enter 2nd year B.Tech directly (lateral entry). Conducted by JNTU Anantapur on behalf of APSCHE every year. You skip the 1st year of B.Tech entirely. That is a huge advantage.

Are You Eligible?

  • Diploma in Engineering or Technology from any recognised Board of Technical Education
  • Final year diploma students can apply — no need to wait for results
  • B.Sc Mathematics holders are also eligible for certain branches
  • No age limit

The Exam — What Exactly Happens?

Fully online — Computer Based Test (CBT). You sit at a computer in the exam centre.

  • Total Questions: 200 | Total Marks: 200
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • NO negative marking — never leave a question blank
  • Mathematics: 50 Qs | Physics & Chemistry: 50 Qs | Branch Subject: 100 Qs
No negative marking means a blank answer = 0, but a guess = maybe 1. Always fill something. This alone can change your rank.

The Most Important Thing About Your Rank

Just qualifying (scoring 50/200) is NOT enough. To get into a good college in a good city, you need a strong rank — aim for 130+ marks. The qualifying mark only puts you in the rank list. The actual college you get depends on your rank versus thousands of other students. In a tie, higher marks in the branch paper decides the better rank.

What Happens After the Exam — Counselling

  1. Results declared → register on the counselling portal
  2. Pay counselling fee and get documents verified at a help centre
  3. Fill web options — list 30 to 40 colleges and branches in order of preference
  4. Seats allotted based on your rank, category (OC/BC/SC/ST), and Local Area (AU or SVU zone)
  5. Accept allotment online (self-reporting) and then physically report to your college
Senior tip: Fill at least 30–40 web options. Students who fill only 5–10 choices often miss out in the first round. More options = better safety net.

Common Mistakes That Kill Your Rank

  • Starting preparation too late — the #1 regret of most seniors
  • Treating the branch paper casually — it is 100 marks and fully in your control
  • Not doing PYQs — previous year papers repeat patterns every year
  • Leaving questions blank — there is zero negative marking, never do this
  • Ignoring Mathematics — 50 marks of pure scoring if you practice regularly

Why Your Branch Paper is Your Biggest Weapon

The branch paper is 100 out of 200 marks — half the exam. It is based entirely on what you already studied in your diploma. You know this material. You just need to revise it properly and practice exam-style questions. This is exactly what JustKnown is built for — branch-specific tests, matched to the real exam pattern, question by question.
