AP ECET Exam Pattern & Syllabus: The Complete Guide for 2027 Aspirants
Everything about how AP ECET is structured, who conducts it, and what to actually study — branch by branch.
A complete, accurate breakdown of the AP ECET exam pattern, eligibility, and branch-wise syllabus (CME, ECE, EEE, MECH, CIVIL) — based on the latest official pattern, with an honest note on what's confirmed vs pending for 2027.
What is AP ECET, exactly?
AP ECET (Andhra Pradesh Engineering Common Entrance Test) is the exam that lets diploma holders in Engineering, Technology, or Pharmacy — and B.Sc graduates with Mathematics as a subject — get lateral entry directly into the 2nd year of B.E./B.Tech/B.Pharmacy programmes in Andhra Pradesh. You skip 1st year entirely.
It's conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Anantapur (JNTUA) on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE), every year.
Exam pattern — what to actually expect
This pattern has stayed consistent for the last several years, so it's a safe baseline to prepare against:
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-Based Test (CBT) |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Total questions | 200 |
| Total marks | 200 (1 mark per question) |
| Question type | Objective / Multiple Choice |
| Negative marking | None |
| Medium | English |
Because there's no negative marking, the smartest strategy is simple: attempt every question. An educated guess costs you nothing, and leaving a question blank guarantees zero marks either way.
How the question paper is structured
For the Engineering diploma stream, the paper is split into 4 sections:
- Mathematics — common to every branch
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Your specific Engineering subject — this is the branch-specific part, and it usually carries the most weight
(B.Sc Mathematics candidates get a different structure — Mathematics, Analytical Ability, and Communicative English.)
Branch-wise subject focus
The Engineering Mathematics section is the same across branches — matrices, trigonometry, differential and integral calculus, differential equations, coordinate geometry, and basic probability, all at diploma level, not degree level. Don't waste time studying B.Sc-level maths; JNTUA sets questions from what you've actually covered in your diploma.
For the branch-specific section:
Computer Science Engineering (CME)
Digital Electronics, Computer Organization, C and Data Structures, Operating Systems, RDBMS, Object-Oriented Programming (C++), Java Programming, Computer Networks, Software Engineering.
Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE)
Electronic Devices and Circuits, Circuit Theory, Digital Electronics, Communication Systems, Advanced Communication Systems, Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, Electronic Measuring Instruments, Industrial Electronics.
Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)
Basic Electrical Engineering, Electrical Machines, Power System Generation & Protection, Transmission and Distribution, Electric Traction, Digital Electronics, Industrial Electronics, Microcontrollers & PLCs.
Mechanical Engineering (MECH)
Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials, Design of Machine Elements, Hydraulic Machines and Pneumatics, Workshop Technology, Steam Boilers/Nozzles/Turbines, Refrigeration, Automobile Engineering, Industrial Management.
Civil Engineering (CIVIL)
Strength of Materials, Theory of Structures, Reinforced Concrete Structures, Surveying, Hydraulics, and Irrigation Engineering.
Who's eligible
- A Diploma in Engineering/Technology from a recognized institute (or a B.Sc with Mathematics), with a minimum of 45% marks (40% for reserved categories)
- Indian nationality, meeting AP's local/non-local domicile rules
- No upper age limit
What actually happens after the exam (based on the 2026 cycle)
To give you a realistic sense of the full timeline — not just the exam day — here's roughly how the 2026 cycle unfolded: applications opened in early March, the exam itself ran in a single day across two shifts in late April, results were declared about 2 weeks later, and counselling through the CAP portal (cap.apcfss.in) began in mid-July, allotting roughly 56,000 seats across around 240 colleges. Computer Science consistently draws the highest demand among branches.
One honest note
As of writing this, APSCHE hasn't released the official AP ECET 2027 notification yet — it typically comes out between January and March for that year's exam. The pattern, eligibility rules, and branch syllabus above have held steady for years and are safe to start preparing against right now, but always cross-check exact 2027 dates and any last-minute changes against the official notification once it's out, at cets.apsche.ap.gov.in/ECET.
What to do right now
Don't wait for the notification to start studying — the syllabus almost never changes drastically year to year. Start with your branch-specific subjects and Mathematics now; you'll thank yourself in March.
